Keep Marching for Freedom

I continue to be amazed with the extent to which this issue flew below the radar screen for many Canadians, but I am equally amazed at the power of that blogs have had in this debate.

While Warren posts thinly-veiled threats in the form of anonymous emails, it's increasingly clear, that for the defenders of section 13(1) of the Human Rights Act, the enemies are at the gate.

It's taken some time, but the coalition against this unenlightened legal passage, has expanded from a ragtag band of right-leaning bloggers, to the echelons of the left-leaning establishment One must assume that Richard Warman himself, is worrying about how many more visits to the trough he can sneak in, before a drain hole is bored through the bottom.

This fight cannot end now. We have the initiative. We must continue to remind our governments that we don't find the status quo acceptable, and we demand action taken on this issue.

Still, much to my dismay, Stephen Harper treats this as an off-topic issue, presumably because he fears how Liberals will spin it. But Harper has a Liberal MP on side, among others who are too afraid to speak out.

Save Afghanistan, if you want to throw the Liberal Party into even more chaos, then what better time to move on this issue. Tell Canadians you're going to stand up for our Charter Rights. Own this issue. Canadians get it, despite what daily spindoctorings at warrenkinsella.com tell you.

The wind is at your back Stephen. It's time.

He treats it as an off-topic issue because it has galvanized the support of radical hatemongers.

I agree with you on the overalls of the free speech issue, Mike. I think you and Shaidle have done a great job on mobilizing people. But you can't really think Harper should move on this now.

There is a time for action and a time to just keep quiet and stare at your cards.

That is what Harper is doing and it is smart.

Do you really think the MSM would allow Harper to own the issue? This issue right now would be the gift to Stephane Dion that keeps on giving. "Human Rights" issues like SSM are too recent and the MSM will attach Harper to the opposite side. I wish that were not true but it is.

Harper is a smart man. This is one issue I am glad the Conservatives are - not - touching before an election. It would kill him. Period. End of debate. Finito. Done. Just like Faith Based schools killed Tory.

Didn't matter that much of what was said was false and lies and we got segregated schools anyway. The spin is what mattered. It is way too easy to spin this against Harper. Yes, I know PEN and many other left-wing groups are now coming out...good. But they will not be there at the end of the day when the Torstar runs a photo of Harper next to a swastika wearing old nut like Zundel.

The Liberals would pull out all stops with ads of every demo under the sun saying how they were abused historically and the Liberals are right.

From a point of pure poltics, I can't see how you and Shaidle can't see that. And I agree with you on most other issues.

If he gets a majority and then does nothing...fine. But to touch that now would make him the dumbest politician in the planet.

You are really wrong on this assessment and I am a free speech libertarian. It's all right to delay one or two battles in an effort to win a war.

I know the arguments, Nicol. I've had people close to the Tories tell me what the thinking is.

The thing is though: I don't think the Toronto Star will risk said picture. And if they did, I think you underestimate the backfire it will create. The Conservative war room will capitalize on that so fast, it wouldn't be funny.

In fact, I hope the Liberal's try to paint Harper as a Nazi sympathizer.

I'll enjoy their massacre at the polls, since I don't believe for a second that Canadians will buy it.

Things are progressing well without the Conservatives needing to take a risk here. Why make trouble?

The average Canadian is not an intellectual who worries about these issues. Sorry. That's the truth. I wish it wasn't. Their brew, their game, their Timmy's is what they care about most. Their opinions on this type of matter are formed by the MSM. The MSM is not PMSH's friend.

This is the kind of issue that needs to percolate slowly under the radar, for months and even years, until when the day comes that the HRC mandate is altered, it will not be a revolutionary thing, but practically self evident. No political bloodbath required, no capital expended. It's just the right thing to do.

I don't remember the last time I thought that a prime minister of Canada was smart until this one. PMSH is smart. I trust his judgment more than that of any of the "pundits" in the blogosphere.

Until then, we need to keep plugging from here, and keep the loose cannons under control before they undermine the HUGE gains that have been made.

Mike, If this story does ascend out of the blogging nerdosphere, I will match you five quotes of JS Mill and another three from De Toqueville against one from Canadian Nazi Paul Fromm. In other words, in the real world, Harper knows its a loser.

Mike, your insanity knows no bounds. Even after the Post has printed two shit-eating apologies to Richard Warman, you continue to claim he is cooking stories up to make a buck. Even Ezra and Kate have stopped repeating that allegation. Not you!

You are an angry and peculiar person. You need another hobby.
